Specimen collection packs for COVID-19 testing will be distributed by mobile teams in bar districts to encourage bar employees and customers to get tested, Under Secretary for Food & Health Dr Chui Tak-yi said today.
He told a press briefing this afternoon that since September 30, the city has seen 10 straight days of COVID-19 infections of unknown source, which is an alarm signal as there are invisible chains of transmission in the community.
Dr Chui noted the Government is providing different channels to encourage the public to go for testing in a user-friendly manner, adding that specimen collection packs can be obtained from Hospital Authority general out-patient clinics or private doctors.
In view of the recent infection clusters in bars, the Government will arrange mobile teams to distribute specimen collection packs in Lan Kwai Fong, Central tonight.
Similar arrangements will be made in Tsim Sha Tsui and Wan Chai this weekend.
Dr Chui said: “Because bars are very favourable places for certain citizens, we can provide an outreach service through mobile teams to encourage bar staff and customers to get a bottle for testing.
“The whole purpose is to facilitate people to get tested as soon as possible and that is also one of the main strategies to pick up cases as early as possible.
“Because this mobile service will operate from 6pm to midnight, which is not the usual operating hours for a fixed location kind of operation, so it will facilitate sample collection in a certain way.”
The Government will also run a temporary testing centre at Harbour Road Sports Centre in Wan Chai tomorrow at the earliest and another at Shek Lei Community Hall from October 11. Both centres will be open until October 14.
For the mobile service, the contractor will provide deep throat saliva testing, while the temporary testing centres will collect combined throat and nasal swabs.
