19 Dec, 2024

The Witcher 4 is getting closer! At The Game Awards 2024, CD Projekt RED introduced the game's first trailer, and shared some details about the project. The gameradar.com portal has collected everything that is known about the game at the moment.

What we know about The Witcher 4: release date, platform, plot

Release date and platforms

CR Projekt Red has not yet specified any details about the release of The Witcher 4. Neither date nor platform. At The Game Awards 2024, the studio didn't even hint at a release date: the game is unlikely to be released in 2025, and 2026 seems unlikely. According to the developer, the project will only enter the “large-scale production phase” in early 2024.

What's new in the gameplay?

The Witcher 4 will be familiar to fans of the third game but will bring some significant changes. Even though the game is once again set on the Continent, the developers still hope to make the world more brutal. CDPR has confirmed that the project will be a single-player RPG in an open world where many of the player's decisions will have consequences.

And the main female character of the game will be Ciri. She is not like her adoptive father Geralt and is more open to the world around her: in The Witcher 4 she will have to fight not only ancient nightmares, but also the evil hidden in ordinary people. However, Ciri has followed the path of a witch, which means she will be able to wield swords and drink elixirs, while supplementing her fighting skills with magic. According to CDPR, the game will focus on a “seamless” combination of Ciri's abilities and witcher skills – this will underpin The Witcher 4's combat system.

What is the plot of the game about?

So far the authors have not revealed plot details, but we know what the story will be about in general. The Witcher 4 will show Ciri's development as a witch and the beginning of her new journey. It makes sense that the game is intended to be the first installment of a future series. According to the developers, they knew for a long time that they wanted to make Ciri the main character of The Witcher 4. In addition, she opens up new storytelling opportunities thanks to her emotionality and openness to people. The game's executive producer, Małgorzata Mitrega, stated that “relationships and emotions will be as important as the fight for survival.”

The Witcher 4 open world

CDPR believes that The Witcher 4 will deliver “the most ambitious and engaging open world in the series' history.” There are no details yet, but judging by the tone of the trailer, the Continent Ciri will travel will be much more dangerous and unpredictable than Geralt's adventures.

What engine is the game developed on?

The Witcher 4 is being developed on Unreal Engine 5. The studio has talked about its decision to abandon its own REDengine (The Witcher 3, Cyberpunk 2077) in 2022. CDPR also noted that the debut trailer was created using the same technology as the game – to give audiences an idea of the type of graphics they can expect.

Will Geralt appear in the game?

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had several possible endings, but now we know that at least two of them weren't canon endings – Ciri didn't become queen and didn't die. The final ending also hints at Geralt's death, but he is definitely alive: CDPR has confirmed that the main character played by actor Doug Cockle will appear in the game. True, the developers did not specify any roles. It's reasonable to assume that he left the wizarding path and retreated – perhaps along with Yennefer or Triss.
