Valve has announced the long-awaited SteamOS expansion, making the system available for a third-party console for the first time.

Valve will allow SteamOS to be installed on third-party consoles

As early as May 2025, Lenovo will release Legion Go S, the first official gaming console with SteamOS pre-installed.

However, the company plans to go further and offer the possibility of installing its operating system on other devices sooner: a beta version for third-party consoles will be released in March.

As Pierre-Loupe Griffe, lead designer of Steam Deck, explained, this will be an official release that will make SteamOS accessible to enthusiasts and testers.

Valve has added support for some devices, such as the Asus ROG Ally. Furthermore, the popular fan project Bazsite, which adapts SteamOS for other platforms, has become a platform for new solutions.

Valve emphasized that currently only Lenovo has the right to officially pre-install SteamOS.

The company strives to avoid system fragmentation, maintaining flexibility and a single update base.
