Sony and AMD have jointly decided to develop AI-based gaming solutions for all platforms. The collaboration, called Project Amethyst, was announced by PlayStation 5 architect Mark Cerny, who described it as a multi-year effort to advance machine learning (ML) in games.

The project has two goals. First, Sony and AMD are committed to creating better architecture for ML, specifically the CNN neural networks used in game graphics. Second, they will strive to create high-quality CNNs to improve “visual perception.”

Cerny emphasized that this technology will not be limited to PlayStation. Project Amethyst will support ML on consoles, PCs, and the cloud. However, players should not expect immediate results. Since new consoles take several years to develop, these improvements could appear on future devices like the PlayStation 6.

Meanwhile, companies are laying the groundwork.
