Visit the Shalom Theater in St. Petersburg

From February 12 to 16, the Afisha company together with the Alexandrinsky Theater named after Vs. Meyerhold will perform his first major tour in St. Petersburg of the country's only professional Jewish theater, the Moscow Shalom Theater, after its restart in 2021. Performances will take place on the new stage. Details and tickets follow the link.

Four iconic performances will be presented on Alexandrinka's New Stage, reflecting a new phase in the development of Jewish theater: productions that showcase the diverse energies of the young, close-knit troupe. This has discovered many new names for the Moscow public. Shalom's repertoire is aimed at audiences of all nationalities, and performances are often created by multinational groups. This allows the theater to find new artistic solutions, connecting them with Jewish tradition.

The theater explores human nature through the lens of modern drama, the heritage of world authors and biblical stories, while experimenting with new forms. Each work becomes a study of man, his perception of the world in a complex and rapidly changing reality. “Shalom” shows that theater is not only the realm of art but also a place for dialogue about the past, present and future.

Ilya Altshuler, General Director of Afisha Company:

“This is the second theater tour that the Afisha company has organized in St. Petersburg. It is important that we introduce to the public St. Petersburg the repertoire of the best theaters in Moscow, thereby developing the culture of both cities. “Shalom” is one of the most relevant and rapidly growing scenes today. I'm sure that for St. Petersburg, theater performances will become a memorable event in the cultural life of the city. And Afisha will continue to work to ensure that more such events happen.”

Oleg Lipovetsky, artistic director of the Shalom Theater:

“We try to create a platform that can talk to people about the issues they care about. Our show is about how to remain human under the most difficult and unbearable conditions. Dialogue with the audience is very important for us – so that they understand us, feel us and share our thoughts. The choice of materials, instruments and artists who create performances depends on this goal. Therefore, our repertoire includes works that resonate with wide audiences as well as theater critics and discerning audiences. We are also not afraid of theatrical experiments aimed at expanding the boundaries of art. One of the most important tools in our performance is humor: laughter breaks down fear, unites people and helps talk about complex things in a language that everyone can understand. accessible.”

Andrey Sokolov, deputy artistic director of the Shalom Theater:

“Shalom appreciates the opportunity to share his art with audiences in different regions of Russia. For us, the tour is an opportunity to establish connections with new audiences, exchange ideas and explore new cultural spaces. Cooperation with the New Stage of the Alexandrinsky Theater is especially important for us. Here we feel very interested in modern theater; this place is the ideal place for Shalom to meet the St. Petersburg. We are also grateful to Afisha for their great support, thanks to which viewers will be able to see various performances of our theater in one tour. This is a great opportunity to showcase every aspect of our repertoire.”

Nikita Kobelev, artistic director of the Alexandrinsky Theater:

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to present Shalom Moscow Theater shows on our New Stage. Residents of St. Petersburg will get acquainted with the new appearance of this theater, with what it has become under the artistic direction of Oleg Lipovetsky. The new stage was created as a platform for experimentation and it was important for us to demonstrate here how different modern theater can be.”
