Reuters: Alaska sues the US government over oil

09 Jan, 2025

The state of Alaska has filed a lawsuit against the outgoing administration of US President Joe Biden over restrictions imposed by the federal government on oil and gas development. Reuters reported this on Tuesday.

As noted, the Alaskan government is not satisfied with the decision of the US government made in December 2024, limiting leasing for the development of oil and gas fields in the state. Because of the decision, developing 400,000 acres (162,000 hectares) of land is “impossible or impractical,” the agency said, citing an excerpt from its statement of claim. It also stated that the measures would “severely limit future oil exploration and drilling” in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska.

US President-elect Donald Trump had previously promised that on his first day after taking office, he would cancel all restrictions on energy production introduced by Biden. He also announced that he would reopen the National Arctic Refuge for oil and gas production.
