Minister for Foreign Affairs Dr Vivian Balakrishnan co-chaired the 23rd ASEAN-European Union (EU) Ministerial Meeting (AEMM) with High Representative of the EU for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice-President of the European Commission (HR/VP) Josep Borrell on 1 December 2020 via videoconference. Singapore is Country Coordinator for the ASEAN-EU Dialogue Relations from August 2018 to August 2021. Other participants included the Foreign Ministers or representatives of ASEAN Member States, EU Member States, as well as the Secretary-General of ASEAN.
At the AEMM, Minister Balakrishnan highlighted the need for ASEAN and the EU to demonstrate leadership, enhance cooperation, and deliver tangible benefits to the people of both regions. He noted that even though ASEAN and the EU shared a longstanding and multifaceted relationship, the two leading regional organisations could do more to signal their commitment to common principles such as multilateralism, inclusivity, and regional integration. The Meeting welcomed expedited progress on the ASEAN-EU Comprehensive Air Transport Agreement and finalisation of the ASEAN-EU Free Trade Agreement. Both sides reiterated their commitment to “vaccine multilateralism” and support for the World Health Organisation to ensure fair, equitable, and affordable access to safe and effective vaccines. Following the conclusion of the videoconference meeting, Singapore and the EU adopted the Co-Chairs’ Press Release.
The Co-Chairs’ Press Release and transcript of Minister Balakrishnan’s intervention are appended.
